If We Must Die by Claude McKay. An analysis of his rhyme and rhythm scheme, alliteration and repetition, and animal imagery.
If We Must Die by Claude McKay. An analysis of his rhyme and rhythm scheme, alliteration and repetition, and animal imagery. In the poem "If We Must Die" by Claude McKay, the author cries out to his audience -to his men at arms- to fight back against those that oppress them and are intent to kill them. Though not as rich in poetic symbolism as the poems by Emily Dickinson and George Herbert, McKay's poem evokes a stronger and more inspiring emotional reaction. He achieves this through his rhyme and rhythm scheme, through alliteration and repetition, and through animal imagery. They shall be examined in reverse order. The first two lines of McKay's poem, "If we must die, let it not be like hogs / Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot," establishes an animal theme, which is continued throughout the rest of the poem. McKay reaches out to the audience with intent to inspire them to action. The audience becomes a hunted animal. In lines three and four, "While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs, / Making their mock at our accursed lot," McKay portrays the adversary as a pack of wild dogs intent on killing th e speaker and his "kinsmen."Death Valley Sand Dunes

Booker T. Washington Self-Made Man Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Booker T. Washington Self-Made Man - Essay Example ââ¬Å"No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem.â⬠à (Washington, Booker T) Washington was able to help those that were discriminated, especially in regaining their rights to vote. He was known as the ââ¬ËTuskegee Machineââ¬â¢ by those that opposed his actions and resented power to the blacks because according to such people, blacks were only meant to be slaves for their thinking was too narrow to allow more communities of people to live in harmony with one another. However, through his speeches and lectures, he was able to help a large number of people understand the ill associated with slavery and thus gain the support of white people belonging to affluent families, black people engaged in the business or working class in society, religious and educational institutions and leaders belonging to the two sects. By mustering so much support, he gained power and was able to inspire many African Americans into ca rrying out new jobs, taking to entrepreneurship, assisting them in mainly climbing the social and financial ladder by emerging out of the depression that slavery had created in their lives by creating happiness for them and thus educating them about the power of being self-reliant instead of depending on others for their livelihoods. He was of the impression that race discrimination mainly existed because of the lack of education among African Americans; they were completely stripped of their rights because of pressure from white people to work as slaves and earn very little or no amount money to sustain their lives as well as those of their familiesââ¬â¢. Washington was able to gather support as well as philanthropic donations and funds from influential people and set up many societies in the agricultural as well as production sector, helping the slaves to rise from their positions. He helped in educating them so that they could lead a better lifestyle and earn money rather than being dominated and treated like servants. His main aim was to help them from the drudgery that they were stuck in and bring them to par with the white people; his personal life story, as depicted in his book, was thus a wonderful example for people to follow and live by, as a story of hard work and diligence and thus is known as a ââ¬Ëself-madeââ¬â¢ man. Another well-known figure in the past of American philanthropy and sociological thinking is Jane Addams, responsible for reforming America during the Progressive Era and pioneering work in the field of womenââ¬â¢s rights including their right to vote and to be able to gain access to a healthier standard of life, especially for mothers and their children. Addams did state that women and men alike needed to be self-reliant and self-made and not dependent on other people for their living, however she was skeptical regarding Washingtonââ¬â¢s demands because according to her people belonging to the lower rungs of society co uld not just rise out of the blue. They needed financial as well as other forms of social

Facilitating Learning and Teaching Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words
Facilitating Learning and Teaching - Essay Example Reflection is a way in which professionals can bridge the theory-practice gap, based on the potential of reflection to uncover knowledge in and on action (Schon, 1983 cited in Taylor, 2006). (Taylor, 2006) in his book defined reflection in more broad way, Reflection is the throwing back of thoughts and memories, in cognitive acts such as thinking, contemplation, meditation and any other form of attentive consideration, in order to make sense of them, and to make contextually appropriate changes if they are required. When we use reflection it enable us to explore what is beyond the line of vision and to look around and find out what is behind. Reflection in nursing education allows students to express their learning which occurred in the clinical placement (Kuiper & Pesut, 2004). The reflection can confirm and correct actions. Doing that equips you translate strategies successfully in the new situations and continue development. Also when problems exist it enables you to avoid using t he previous solutions in the new similar situations and try another new ways of actions (Jones, 2010:11) Reflection is divided in to two types, reflection in action and reflection on action, identified by Donald Schon (1983) Cited by Jasper (2003). Reflection in action is the way that people think and theorise about practice while they are doing it. It is an automatic activity occurs during situation in the practice in every day practice. Reflection on action involves us in consciously exploring experience and thinking about practice after it has occurred to discover the knowledge used in the situation. This occurs through analysis, interpretation, and the recombination of information about the experience so that the new perspectives are found about that what has happened. It is an active process that changes the experience to knowledge by thinking, analyzing and describing the situation. In this paper work I am going to reflect on a lecture given by me for midwivesââ¬â¢ students and will use reflection on action through following Gibbs reflection framework (Rolf et al,2001:18 & Jasper 2003:6). This reflection framework model is developed by Graham Gibbs in 1998. It consists of six stages that guide you through the process of reflection by asking a set of question divided in the cycle stages. The stages are description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan (Jasper, 2003:78). Description Meeting with the lecturer was made two week before the lecture day, which gave enough time to read, plan and prepare for the lecture. The lecture subject and the time were discussed between me and the module lecturer. The topic was about kidney and urine formation, covering anatomy and pathophysiology. It was the last session on a Friday and the students are eager to go home and start their weekend; I arrived one hour before the session, to meet the lecturer and to show here the material, the case studies related to the subject and the multiple choice q uestions. After that we discussed the session plan and she suggested to amend one multiple choice question and it was done. We arrived in the class room and the lecturer introduced me and my colleague and informed the student that we are going to give todayââ¬â¢s lectures. My colleague started her lecture that was about body fluids. I sat on the side to take some notes that will be useful to include in my session. After my colleague

Continental Congress in Philadelphia Essay Example for Free
Continental Congress in Philadelphia Essay One of the most well-known female politicians of the time was Mercy Otis Warren of Massachusetts. Like several other women concerned with public issues, Warren grew up in a political family. Her father James Otis, Sr. , had long been active in high-level provincial politics; her brother James Otis, Jr. , had been an outspoken detractor of British rule, and her husband James Warren was a most important member of the Massachusetts legislature. Mrs. Warren would write several pamphlets, poems, and plays in support of the Patriot movement. One of her plays, The Adulateur (1772), implicated a legendary kingdom named Servia, where the good subjects possessed with a love of liberty were being enslaved by a tyrannical ruler. Warren took some pride in womens contribution to the colonial resistance. ââ¬Å"Be it known unto Britain even American daughters are politicians and patriots, and will aid the good work with their feeble efforts. â⬠7 Even though she was well aware that politics remained ââ¬Å"a subject . . . much out of the road of female attention,â⬠8 she quietly defended the right of women to articulate their opinions. During the war period, she frequently corresponded with like-minded individuals for instance Abigail Adams regarding the latest developments, and afterward wrote an extremely partisan three-volume history of the American Revolution. Equally eager of speaking out politically (albeit in private correspondence) was Abigail Adams, the wife of John Adams. Throughout the pre-Revolutionary years, Abigail had ready comments on the regal conflict and very much favoured separation from the mother country. When her husband John was a delegate to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia and beginning to prepare a new system of government, she even confided to him regarding what she considered a very important domestic matterthe rights of women. On the eve of American independence, Abigail wrote: ââ¬Å"By the way in the new Code of Laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. â⬠9 Abigail was not a contemporary feminist and had no wish to change the conventional relationship between man and woman; however she apparently did want some restraint placed on the use of male power within the family. John appeared more amused than angry at the outburst but made no effort to follow through on Abigails request. Neither did any of his congressional colleagues take up the subject. While John Adams had no wish to alter the legal status of women or grant them voting rights, he did think that they could hold political opinions and comment on significant issues in a family setting. So frequent were his discussions with his wife on such matters that at one point Abigail declared: ââ¬Å"What a politician you have made me. â⬠10 Abigail Adams of all the women at the time would have welcomed the possibility to use the ballot had it been given to members of her sex. On Election Day in 1780, she confirmed her desire to be part of the political process by assisting at the local polling place, preparing tickets. ââ¬Å"If I cannot be a voter upon this occasion,â⬠she said, ââ¬Å"I will be a writer of votes. I can do some thing in that way. â⬠11 Several years afterward, Abigail commented on the existence of woman suffrage in New Jersey, saying that ââ¬Å"if our state constitution had been equally liberal . . . and admitted the female to a vote, I should certainly have exercised it. â⬠12 Later, during her husbands presidency, she explicitly handled some of his political correspondence, even writing to Elbridge Gerry, emissary to France, amid the controversial XYZ affair in 1797. She as well carried on an widespread exchange of letters with such luminaries as Thomas Jefferson after her husband left the White House.

Analysis Of Islam :: essays research papers
Religiological Analysis of the Islam Through the Koran and Hadith Islam may be considered as an exotic religion to many in the western part of the globe. The impression that Westerners have is usually obtained through the media representing Islamic countries or groups in the middle of a Holy War. The wars, called Jihad, are usually waged by Islamic Fundamentalist who use terrorism to get their messages across giving Islam a negative reputation. Because of the lack of understanding of this highly publicized religion, many conflicts arise between the people who live in eastern and western worlds. In turn, this causes problems amongst different cultures through various political and religious battles that result from these misconceptions. In order to prevent future strife, it is important for people all over the world to have a better understanding of other religions. To interpret Islam from a objective point of view it is easier to use Religiological Analysis, a system that that break s the religion down into specific terms: Epistemology, Ontology, Anthropology, Psychology, Teleology, and Methodology. The Epistemology of Islam is contained in the sacred book called the Koran that was revealed in Arabic to the Prophet Muhammad in exact words of God through the Angel Gabriel. The Koran means Recollect, Clarify, Recital, Reading, and Criterion. It contains truths about everything and functions as a recollection of all previously revealed books. When Muhammad was forty years old, he had his first revelation and continued to do so for the next twenty-two years, remembering each revelation and then having them written down by scholars. The whole book consists of chapters that were believed to be put in order by Muhammad himself and are word for word from God. This book is the most widely read and memorized book in the world and because of the number of people memorizing the book it helped it remain unchanged for the past fourteenth centuries. Containing truths about th e world and our existence till the end (Judgement Day), it is also a guide for us on a way to live and worship God. Besides the Koran, Sunnah, known as the customs or practices of the Prophet Muhammad are also considered sources of knowledge by Muslims who hold him as an exemplary human and try to emulate his actions and lifestyle. His actions, and sayings were recorded and reported in what is know as the Hadith, a collection of his doings in his whole life.

ââ¬ÅBisy Backsonââ¬Â representing Western Society Essay
In the novel, The Tao of Pooh we are introduced to ââ¬Å"Bisy Backsonâ⬠who represents the most misguided of Western Society, as well, we are shown that Western societal thinkers/philosophers/writers represent, in their own way, the Tao. ââ¬Å"Bisy Backsonâ⬠confuses exercise with work and activity with creativity. ââ¬Å"The Bisy Backson is almost desperately active,â⬠(p. 93) says Benjamin Hoff. He adds, ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s put it this way: if you want to be healthy, relaxed, and contented, just watch what a Bisy Backson does and then do the opposite.â⬠Often, in Western Society, we focus on the final product before we have begun the journey. When Pooh considers what he likes best in the world, he decides the ââ¬Å"â⬠¦moment just before you begin to eat [honey]â⬠was what he enjoys most. In effect, it is the journey, or the process, that we most enjoy. This, of course, goes against the typical personââ¬â¢s attitude toward a task, in Western Society. The goal is to get the task done (much like this journal assignment). The process is often seen as punitive. Pooh would say to enjoy the process ââ¬â to see it as an opportunity to create, to develop, and, above all, to understand the central role of change and growth in life. Western societal thinkers/philosophers/writers represent, in their own way, the Tao, becauseâ⬠¦ actually, I do not think they represent Taoism, at all. Taoism, I think, is basically just to enjoy life in its simplest form, and not to worry too much ââ¬â take life as a gift and just enjoy it. Again, I think. After reading this book, (I still have two or three more chapters to goâ⬠¦), I still cannot manage to understand a simple meaning of Taoism. I have looked on the internet, and it is nothing like Pââ¬â¢u, because everything I have come across is all so complex. Anyway, if Taoism is that, Western societal thinkers/philosophers/writers do not represent it, at all! They question everything, want to know answers, and usually they question their own existence. Would someone who isâ⬠¦ someone like, Pooh, question their existence? I donââ¬â¢t think so. In addition, Western societal thinkers/philosophers/writers do not learn how they should question, they do not learn these theories, they do not learn about Taoism, they just merrily think and their answers of their questions may just so happen to fall under Taoism. They do not study Taoism to think like a Taoist. They do not read The Tao of Pooh, to learn about how they should thinkâ⬠¦ though manyà philosophy courses, such as Theory of Knowledge, may be text based, which I find, is ironic. For direct reference to the text, ââ¬Å"What does Christopher Robin do in the mornings? He learns. He becomes educated. He integratesâ⬠¦knowledgeâ⬠Of course, all this said with some words capitalized for no reason, and other random words to get to the point. Philosophers do not learn, they teach themselves.
